LEARNING OUTCOMES
The aim of the course is for the student a) to get acquainted with emergency situations, b) to assess the condition of the injured person with speed and accuracy, c) to assess the severity of any emergency with speed and accuracy, d) to screen patients, and to ensure that the best possible care is provided at every point in the assessment, resuscitation and transfer process.
Upon completion of the module students will be able:
- To get acquainted with the area of the Emergency Departments.
- To know the principles of pre-hospital treatment of the multi-injured as described in modern scientific manuals e.g. PHTLS.
- To develop critical thinking and to evaluate urgent pathological situations by applying initial treatment measures in a logical and structured way.
- To know and apply the basic principles of sorting.
- To acquire basic skills in specialized interventions (eg suturing wounds)
- To know the appropriate nursing interventions, to draw up a care plan and to evaluate pre-hospital and in-hospital patients in critical condition.

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skills to Nursing students in order to gain a strong scientific background, experience and know-how in a highly dynamic area of modern science such as Emergency Nursing.
Course Outline
SYLLABUS
Theoretical part
- Introduction to Emergency Nursing
- Organization, Operation and liaison with other departments of the Emergency Department.
- Types of injuries
- Head, Chest and Abdominal Trauma
- Musculoskeletal Injuries – Immobilization techniques.
- Pre-hospital and in-hospital screening (Triage).
- Initial Assessment, Resuscitation and Treatment of a person in critical condition (A, B, C, D, E)
- Secondary Assessment and Treatment of a person in critical condition.
- Rescue Techniques (Shock, Loss of consciousness, Basic and Specialized WRIST, Drowning, Choke/suffocation, Airway, Ventilation, Cricothyroidectomy).
- Principles of Transportation to Injured (transportation – Modes of transport: Land, Air, At sea). Immobilization techniques.
- Evaluation and Management of multitrauma
- Treating a patient with shock.
- Burns and Freezing.
- Urgent treatment of bites (snake, animals, insects)
- The comatose patient at the scene of the accident and in the ICU
- Heat Stroke and Hypothermia
- Poisonings
- Industrial injuries
- Pathological/medical Emergencies: outpatient treatment & management in the ICU
- Acute incidents inside the hospital and rescue teams
- Organization and operation of Ambulance Services- Mass Disasters
Laboratory part
- Includes clinical practice of students in Emergency Departments of University Hospitals or NSS Hospitals.
