LEARNING OUTCOMES

The purpose of the course is to educate students in the identification and treatment of mental disorders and psychosocial needs of patients with physical illnesses who are treated in non-psychiatric areas of the General Hospital and develop mental health problems during their treatment. Particular emphasis is placed on the cooperation of the psychiatrist with the pathological and surgical field regarding the treatment of mental problems, the support and education of the patient, relatives and health professionals involved in patient care. Students are provided with knowledge of the basic principles and process of counseling, the methods used, the characteristics and role of the counselor as well as the basic skills that help to create a constructive counseling relationship, with a view to familiarizing students with approaches and practices that will be useful to them depending on the problems and needs of the patients they treat.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Apply the theoretical knowledge, already acquired, in the identification and evaluation of mental disorders, psychosocial needs and psychosomatic symptoms of patients with organic disease.
  • Understand the concepts and theories of counseling and their connection with nursing care.
  • Understand the process of counseling and the therapeutic relationship between counselor and patient, considering the ethical and deontological problems that arise.
  • Integrate Counseling elements into clinical practice and nursing care.
  • Apply skills and techniques in the context of counseling to support and educate patients, families, relatives and health professionals involved in patient care.
  • Discuss strategies for the safe management of difficult reactions and behavioral disorders of patients and relatives occurring in hospital and outpatient structures, by incorporating the principles of counseling and knowledge of psychopathology.
  • Create a safe environment, conducive to optimal health and dignity of patients and families.
  • Operate both autonomously and as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

SYLLABUS

  • Introduction to basic concepts of Liaison Mental Health Nursing. Historical evolution. Liaison Mental Health Nursing in general hospital. Liaison Mental Health Nursing team and consultant.
  • Psychiatric and psychological problems that affect physically ill patients’ recovery.
  • Common clinical problems in Liaison Mental Health Nursing.
  • Mental disorders of patients with pathological conditions.
  • Mental disorders of patients with surgical conditions.
  • Psychosocial problems and mental disorders of patients with chronic illnesses.
  • Specific patient population (children, adolescents, elderly people). The female patient.
  • Psychological-psychiatric approach of patient with cancer. The dying patient.
  • Introduction to Counseling. Main theoretical approaches.
  • Principles, role and scope of counseling in Liaison Mental Health Nursing. Counseling importance in nursing and health care professions.
