STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

The evaluation will take place at the end of each semester in the form of written examinations. It will include a broad range of open-ended questions and multiple-choice questions. It is also possible to assign optional tasks (essays) during the semester that will be considered in the final grade. The evaluation criteria of the written essays are:

  • Undertaking a literature review.
  • Understanding the subject under investigation.
  • Evaluation and synthesis of relevant data.
  • Critical analysis.
  • Topic exploration.
  • Writing style
  • Referencing style.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is for the student to understand a) the fundamental principles of assessment and nursing treatment of respiratory diseases b) the need to use modern research and scientific studies in the clinical identification and therapeutic approach of each disease and c) the preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation of patients with respiratory diseases.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • recognize the presence of obstructive disease, the presence of restrictive disease, the existence of disturbances in gas exchange, and generally the degree of reduction of respiratory function.
  • apply the basic principles of nursing care for each disease and to be able to select the most appropriate therapeutic remedies.
  • implement comprehensive postoperative treatment programs for patients who have undergone thoracic surgery, which are safe and appropriate for any clinical case, including patients at high risk of postoperative complications

Course Outline

 

SYLLABUS

  • Respiratory system: anatomy, definition and mechanism of respiration, voice production, respiratory function (ventilation, ventilation disorders, control of ventilation function, arterial blood gases and gas exchange analysis), common symptoms of respiratory diseases, symptomatic relief clinical manifestations, humidification, outpatient examinations, clinical examination of a patient.
  • Respiratory disorders (atelectasis, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary edema, pulmonary hypertension – pulmonary heart disease).
  • Smoking and lung cancer.
  • Diseases of the upper respiratory tract (common cold, acute sinusitis, acute tonsillitis, herpes simplex virus – HSV).
  • Diseases of the lower respiratory tract (acute laryngitis, chronic laryngitis, laryngeal cancer, acute epiglottitis, acute tracheitis, acute bronchitis, bronchiectasis, bronchial carcinoma, pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, pulmonary abscess).
  • Diseases of the pleura (pleurisy, pleural effusion, emphysema, pneumothorax).
  • Infectious diseases of the lungs (lobular pneumonia, viral and bacterial pneumonia, nosocomial infection, pneumonia in immunocompromised patients, aspiration pneumonia).
  • Granulomatous diseases of the lungs (pulmonary tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, granulomatous or pulmonary vasculitis, histoplasmosis).
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma).
  • Restrictive lung diseases (adult respiratory distress syndrome – ARDS, cryptogenic fibrous alveolitis, exogenous allergic alveolitis, miners pneumoconiosis, Goodpasture syndrome, silicosis, siderosis, asbestosis).
