LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the end of the course students should be able to:
- Plan the management of patients who will undergo medium, large and very large surgeries such as Heart, Thoracic and Vascular, Urinary Tract System, Musculoskeletal System, Neurosurgery and Organ Transplantation.
- Apply the nursing process in the context of preoperative and postoperative care
- Recognize the risks of surgery and the nursing role in prevention and treatment
- Provide care to the operated patient
- Early recognition and management of postoperative complications
- Educate the patient and his family by planning and implementing a tailored patient education program
- Recognize the patient’s criteria for discharge from the hospital

- The general competence is the responsibility for the planning, management and evaluation of the care of surgical patients, including the supervision of other health care workers, working autonomously or in teams with medical doctors and others in the practical application of preventive and curative measures.
Tasks performed usually include: assessing, planning, providing and evaluating nursing care for patients according to the practice and standards of modern nursing.
Course Outline
SYLLABUS
Theory
This course is based on the Nursing Process and includes nursing care plans in the context of providing the most frequent and complex surgeries. In particular it includes:
- Brief Description of the disease
- Nursing Care Plan
- Preparation of the patient according the kind of surgery
- Preoperative Nursing Diagnoses and Nursing interventions
- Expected results after each preoperative nursing intervention
- Postoperative Nursing Diagnoses according the kind of surgery and Nursing interventions
- Expected results after each postoperative nursing intervention
- Most common complications and prevention of complications after surgery
- Preparing the patient for discharge from the hospital
- Plan for home care and rehabilitation
In particular, this course includes the Nursing Care Plan for each type of surgery and concerns the Nursing Treatment of Patients in the context of the most frequent and serious surgeries such as:
- Cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgery
- Surgery of Urinary Tract System
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Neurosurgery
- Organ Transplant
Laboratory
The laboratory includes clinical training of students in surgical clinics of University Hospitals or NHS Hospitals. In particular, it includes individualized treatment of surgical patients by creating a comprehensive care plan in the clinical area.
