- Design and write a research proposal.
- Answer research and clinical questions based on the latest knowledge
- Describe the necessary skills for the application of new knowledge in clinical practice
- Analyze the techniques of application of change and new knowledge in the clinical environment in order to use in clinical practice modern research results, solving clinical problems and providing quality health care
- Formulate their own research questions taken from clinical practice and to answer them within the course.
GENERAL COMPETENCES
- Search, analysis and synthesis of data and information, using the necessary technologies
- Adaptation to new situations
- Decision making
- Autonomous work, Group work
- Work in an interdisciplinary environment
- Production of new research ideas
- Project design and management
The aim of the course is to equip students with knowledge related to Research Methodology so that they are able to conduct nursing research but also to provide health care to the patient based on recent research data and evidence. The aim of the course is to train students to use the knowledge and skills to identify nursing problems based on the best available research data, best clinical practice, to plan and perform nursing research. To provide students with the necessary knowledge so to enable them to successfully solve clinical nursing problems and to introduce the methodology of Evidence Based Nursing in clinical practice and Nursing Process.
Course Outline
SYLLABUS
The theoretical part refers to the concept and philosophy of research, the types and stages of research, its design and execution, the tools and methods of data collection, analysis and processing, the writing and presentation of the research study, and to Evidence-Based Nursing Methodology.
- Characteristics, purpose, types and utility of nursing research. History and evolution. Future directions. Phases of the research process.
- Ethics of nursing research. Characteristics of ethical research. Ethical restrictions on the acceptance of the Evidence. The rights of research subjects.
- Guidelines and codes. Evidence-based Clinical Nursing and the role of the nurse and the patient.
- Research Questions. Sources of research questions, types of research questions. Theoretical Framework. Definition and purpose of theories. Theoretical frameworks and models in nursing research.
- Literature search. The process of literature search. Greek and foreign sources of literature review.
- Purpose of the research. Hypotheses and research questions. Elements of a hypothesis, types of hypothesis. Variables.
- Types of research designs. True-experimental design, quasi-experimental design, pre-experimental design. Development of a research question as it emerges in clinical practice. Observational and other research designs.
- Sampling. Basic concepts. Probability and non-probability sampling. Sample size, sampling and external validity.
- Quantitative data collection. Interviews and questionnaires. Scales. Observational methods. Developing and fostering a favorable climate for research – How do we overcome obstacles? Measurement. Sources of measurement error. Reliability and validity of the measuring instrument. Critical Assessment of Relevant Quantitative Data and Clinical Nursing Decision Making.
- Qualitative research methods. Design and qualitative research data collection. Qualitative data analysis. Application to nursing research. Critical Assessment of Relevant Qualitative Data and Clinical Nursing Decision Making.
- Presentation of research results. Research Critique. Application of research in nursing practice. Instructions for writing a research proposal.
- Evaluation, communication, and application of a new knowledge and research data in clinical practice. Clinical guidelines – the necessity and application in clinical practice. Nursing Decision Making Strategies.
- Students practice in the Use of Computers for statistical analysis. Statistical programs. Data organization, quantitative data analysis, descriptive statistics, Inferential statistics (in general). They also practice on information retrieval strategies – Databases, gray literature, “key” informants, “experts”, etc. and techniques for evaluating and critically evaluating existing knowledge. They are trained in Scenarios for searching for and evaluation of Quantitative and Qualitative Evidence, in Scenarios for evaluating clinical space for the application of clinical Nursing Evidence and in Scenarios for the application in clinical practice of the Evidence-Based Nursing care process.
Through this methodology students are trained to implement in clinical practice the up-to-date research results, documented good practices, solving clinical problems and providing quality nursing care.
