The ultimate goal of the theoretical course is to enable the student to prevent and treat nosocomial infections as well as to be able to inform and educate the health professionals who are the main transmitters of pathogenic microorganisms.

 

Course Outline

 

SYLLABUS

  • Intra-hospital infections (definition, types of infections).
  • The concept of the Infection Surveillance Nurse.
  • Hand hygiene and personal preventive measures
  • Personal Hygiene of the Patient
  • Isolation measures and categories (basic precautions, contact, droplets, airborne transmission, geographical area).
  • bedinen management. Disinfection in the hospital area
  • Preventive and interventional control measures for intravenous (I.V.) infusion
  • Receiving and transferring samples to the laboratory.
  • Infections from urinary catheters (control and treatment).
  • Surgical infections (control and treatment).
  • Management of patients with infection or colonization of Gram-negative multidrug-resistant pathogens in health care facilities (Patient isolation) Management of newly admitted patients with known colonization or increased colonization potential by a multidrug-resistant strain.
  • Antibiotics administration abuse. Policy and basic principles on the use of antibiotics.
  • Infections in special care units.       
  • Cost of managing hospital infections.
  • Infections recording, protocols, guidelines.
