LEARNING OUTCOMES

After the end of the course students will be able to:

  • To know in general the science of nursing and its subject matter.
  • To acquire knowledge about the History of Nursing Science in Greece and internationally and about the events that were a milestone in the development of Nursing and Nursing education in Greece.
  • Understand the meaning of theory, the importance of nursing theories and models in clinical practice.
  • Understand the concepts of health, wellness, illness and health promotion, as well as the stages of the Nursing process.

The aim of the course is for students to understand the concept of nursing as a care process, the focus of which is human and the purpose is to maintain and promote health.

 

Course Outline

 

 

SYLLABUS

THEORY

  • History of Nursing: In Ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, Iran, Egypt, India, Ancient Rome, Byzantium. The impact of Christianity on the development of Nursing. Nursing during the Renaissance. Nursing in the 19th and 20th centuries. Influential nurses in history. (FL.NIGHTINGALE).
  • Nursing in Greece during the Ottoman occupation, after the liberation, from the period of World War II till now. The development of nursing education (from the Hellenic Civil War till now), the National Association of Nurses of Greece, influential Greek nurses  and the Greek Red Cross.
  • Introductory concepts of Nursing Theories. Their usefulness in Nursing. Nursing Theories: Description – Dynamic Elements and Limitations of Nursing Theories. The theory of F. Nightingale – (Nursing theories based on human needs), the theory of D. Orem’s self-care theory, V. Henderson’s theory. (the principles and practice of Nursing), B. Newman’s Theory (The Newman Systems Model), C. Roy’s Theory (The Model of Adaptation), M. Rogers’s Theory of Science of Unitary Human Beings) and the theory of Parse.
  • Introduction to the concept of health, wellness and illness. Factors that affect health. Health promotion. Levels of health promotion/disease prevention. Holistic health care.
  • Introduction to Nursing Process-Objectives and Stages.
  • Methods of collecting information. Interview – Psychosocial assessment of a person / patient. Nursing history. Nursing Skills: Observation – Diagnostic Handling.
  • Physical examination- and accurate measurement and recording of temperature, breathing and pulse.
  • Measurement and recording of Blood Pressure and Saturation of Oxygen
  • Nursing Assessment of Individual Needs and Problems-Nursing Diagnosis.
  • Development of planning stages, implementation of nursing care plan and evaluation of results; Application of Nursing process.
  • Nursing unit, organization, ward, equipment- Principles of mechanics of the human body.
  • Disinfection – Sterilization – Antisepsis.

 

LABORATORY
