At the end of the course, students are able to:

- Assess patient’s needs mainly through obtaining a health history, clinical examination and laboratory data, per disease
- Know the nursing responsibilities for conducting laboratory tests

The aim of the course is to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge for providing nursing care to patients suffering from pathological conditions.

SYLLABUS
Theoretical part
- Disease: definition, epidemiology, etiology-pathophysiology, clinical manifestations
- Interdisciplinary care nursing
- Patient assessment (Nursing history-clinical examination, laboratory findings)
- Diagnostic examinations – nursing responsibilities for preparation and conduction of clinical tests
- Treatment
- Preparing patient for hospital discharge
In particular, this course refers to the main and most common diseases of all systems of the human body and includes Nursing Assessment of Patients and Nursing Practices that are applied within context of interdisciplinary care as follows:
- Hematological Diseases
- Endocrine Diseases
- Disease of Immune System
- Diseases of the Respiratory System
- Diseases of the Cardiovascular System
- Diseases of the Gastrointestinal System, Liver and Gallbladder
- Diseases of the Urinary Tract System
- Neurological Diseases
- Musculoskeletal and Rheumatic Diseases
- Diseases of the Head, Cervix and Sensory Organs
Laboratory part
Students are trained in the laboratory of pathological-surgical nursing where the necessary specific techniques and skills for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes are taught. In particular, the laboratory work includes the following nursing modules / procedures:
- Administration of intravenous therapy
- Blood taking
- Blood transfusion and products
- Insulin administration
- Oxygen therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Peritoneal dialysis, solution change, peritoneal catheter care
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
- Spirometry
- Ophthalmological and ENT treatments
As part of the laboratory, students visit for a few hours medical wards in tertiary hospitals.
