      • Analysis of roles and stakeholders in a brief case study

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the module students will be able to:

  • To possess the necessary theoretical knowledge regarding the field of Operating Rooms (OR), Anesthesia Care Unit and Central Sterile Services Department.
  • Assess and evaluate the needs of the patient during perioperative follow-up.
  • Evaluate the patient by prioritizing his problems and develop critical thinking in each of their interventions.
  • To integrate with the health professional team in clinical practice.
  • To get acquainted with the diagnostic, therapeutic and invasive techniques performed in the operating room and in the Anesthesia Care Unit.
  • To get acquainted with the organizational and functional procedures of the Operating Rooms (OR), Anesthesia Care Unit and Central Sterile Services Department.

 

GENERAL COMPETENCES

Achieving the required level of responsibilities of Perioperative Nurses such as:

  • Provision of safe quality care in the following fields- Operating Rooms Nursing (theatre nurse or perioperative nurse as scrub nurse or circulating nurse), Anesthetics Nursing (Nurse Anaesthetist and Recovery, Management of pain), Sterilizing Practices (Central Sterile Services Department Nurse)
  • Function as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Participation in quality assurance programs
  • Organization and management of an operating room / operating room unit
  • Participation in risk management strategies

The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge necessary to understand perioperative nursing and to become familiar with the operation of the operating room and the Anesthesia Care Unit and the Central Sterile Services Department, in order to apply safely and successfully nursing actions required during various surgeries.

SYLLABUS

Theoretical part

  • Theories of Perioperative Nursing and philosophical attitudes, Nursing process / organization and administration in operating rooms.
  • Administrative and Clinical OR formation  (operating rooms, Anesthesia Care Unit and Central Sterile Services Department  and interconnection of operating rooms with clinics and laboratories), OR Organization- Equipment and Materials.
  • Classification and Management of Surgeries, Surgical techniques by specialty and techniques of anesthesia.
  • General principles of aseptic technique in the operating room, Environmental conditions in the operating room – Ethics and ethics.
  • Nursing care and perioperative nursing (i): evidence-based nursing and scientifically based practices, application of infection prevention in the perioperative care, promotion of occupational health and safety,
  • Nursing care and perioperative nursing (ii): Ensuring a safe environment for the patient, management of body fluids and tissues about laboratory testing, disposal, burial or maintenance / transplantation, Waste management
  • Professional, legal and ethical practices in OR- Anesthesia Care Unit – Central Sterile Services Department  (implementation of laws and guidelines, acceptance of professional responsibility).
  • Interpersonal relationships and communication in the operating room- Anesthesia Care Unit – Central Sterile Services Department : Ensuring effective interpersonal relationships with patients, where necessary, Recognition of teamwork requirements for effective patient care, Development of written and oral communication strategies, with the aim of correcting transfer of information,
  • Development of organizational and administrative skills in the operating room (i): Use of effective organizational and administrative skills, Control of practices for quality assurance in care, Proper management of human resources to ensure readiness for care,
  • Development of organizational and administrative skills in the operating rooms (ii): Efficiency in the supplies of material resources, ensuring compliance with the best practice guidelines at the lowest possible cost, exercising effective leadership based on understanding and mutual respect and consistent quality care
  • Training and professional development of OR nurses, nurse anesthetist, and Central Sterile Services Department  nurses: Commitment to personal and professional development of employees, Providing training opportunities.
