STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

The evaluation is being held in the Greek language.

  • The written final exam of the course, conducted by the Department, includes: Multiple questions test, Open questions with a brief answer, Comparative evaluation of theoretical elements, Brief study of research, Questions for developing subjects.
  • The grade of the written exam (80%) and the individual assessments (20%) form the final grade of the course.

All students have access to the written and corrected assignments at the professor’s office. In the first class the students are informed in a written form about the course schedule to be followed each week, which is also posted on the subject’s website. They are also informed verbally and in a written form about the way they are evaluated.

Students are taught during the course the basic and specialized subjects of the course that they should know και they are provided with corresponding questions and exercises, which are evaluated. Analytically at the beginning of the semester, a task of a small range with specific characteristics is assigned to them as well as an autonomous assignment that the student presents to his fellow students. They also produce group work.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is a basic introductory course in the concept of Epidemiology.

The course material aims to introduce students to the basic Concepts, Aims and methods of Epidemiology and their historical review is carried out. Also reported and analyzed are: The modern prism of epidemiological data, the accounting of Epidemiology (morbidity and mortality rates), the study of epidemiological characteristics (person, place, time), the Perspective and Retrospective researches and the Epidemiological consideration of prevention. In this sense the course is the basis on which the student acquires an overall understanding of the relationship between Epidemiology, Public Health and Nursing.

The aim of the course is to develop the ability of students to conduct an epidemiological research using epidemiological methods and tools.

Upon successful completion of the course the student becomes able to:

  • Understand the importance of individual’s features, place and time in the incidence of diseases.
  • Discusses the uses, capabilities and weaknesses of the various sources of epidemiological data.
  • Discusses the uses and applications of epidemiology.
  • Understand the differences between different types of epidemiological studies.
  • Develop skills in planning, organizing and conducting epidemiological research, sharpening the mind and its ability to manage data.
  • Understand the term screening and discuss the desired characteristics of mass screening tests.
  • Discusses ways of transmitting infectious diseases and identifies categories of factors that are responsible for infectious diseases.
  • Makes decisions for the selection of the most appropriate epidemiological research.
  • Understand the contribution of Epidemiology to Clinical and Public Health.
  • Discusses the term environmental epidemiology and give examples of environmental factors related to health effects.
  • Adapts to new state of technology and know-how for Epidemiological research.
  • Work in an interdisciplinary environment.

SYLLABUS

  • Introductory concepts of epidemiology, Definitions. Historical overview. Aims and uses. Reasoning and classification in epidemiology.
  • Sources of data. Census. Physical population movement (vital statistics). Registration of diseases. International Statistical Classification of Diseases. Disease report registers. Notification of infectious diseases. Digital Bibliographic databases.
  • Epidemiological index. Epidemic, group disease, spectrum of the disease. Epidemics outbreaks.
  • Outline of epidemiological study. Verification of causal hypotheses. Applications related to the cause of the disease. Interpretation of the results of the causal research studies.
  • Morbidity Indices (Incidence-Prevalence). Applications of incidence data. Mortality Indices. Comparison between rates – Standardization.
  • Descriptive epidemiology. Characteristics of person, place, time. Interpretive problems for person, place and time characteristics. Carrying out a descriptive epidemiological study. Cross sectional studies or studies of prevalence, methods and validity of cross-sectional studies. Systematic bias in epidemiological study and techniques to reduce it.
  • Cohort studies. Characteristics. Advantages and disadvantages. Plasmatic correlations. Interpretation of Findings.
  • Case – control studies (Retrospective Studies). Characteristics. Advantages and disadvantages. Stratified analysis. Interpretation of Findings. Ecological studies.
