STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Written final exam (60%), which includes:

    • Multiple-choice test
    • Open-ended questions
    • Clinical case scenarios

Laboratory Component (40%), which includes:

    • Problem-solving tasks related to pediatric drug dosage calculations
    • Objective structured clinical examination of skills

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The purpose of the course is for students to acquire knowledge and skills related to the biological, psychological, and spiritual needs of both healthy and ill children of all age groups, as well as the needs of their families.

The objective of the course is for students to apply the knowledge gained to identify health problems of the child and the family and to design methods for implementing nursing care.

By the end of the six-month course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the normal physical, psychological, and social development of the child and the factors that influence it.
  • Understand the growth and development of the child from the neonatal period through adolescence.
  • Identify methods for assessing and diagnosing pathological disorders in children.
  • Evaluate and recognize problems of children and their families in emergency situations.

Course Outline

 

SYLLABUS

THEORY

The theoretical part of the course focuses on the healthy newborn, infant, child, and adolescent, including the assessment of all body systems and the physical, psychological, cognitive, and social development of the child, as well as the specific aspects of caring for children across different age groups and their families. Topics include:

  • The child in society, social inequalities, health problems in childhood, pediatric health indicators, children’s rights, the role of the pediatric nurse, the specialty of pediatric nursing, critical thinking, and the care process for children and their families.
  • The definition of the family, nursing interventions directed at the family, family structure, and parental roles – child- and family-centered care.
  • Communication and interview techniques with children and families: assessment, physical examination by system, nutritional status evaluation, and general approaches to pediatric examination.
  • Cross-cultural approaches in pediatric care and issues of accessibility.
  • Growth and development, the role of play in development, and selected factors influencing development.
  • Nutrition – feeding – breastfeeding.
  • Acute pain – fever: pain assessment, management of pain and fever, and clinical guidelines.
  • Neonatal resuscitation – newborn examination – child health booklet – nursing care of the newborn and their family.
  • Prevention and vaccination.
  • Pediatric emergencies (drowning, choking, accidents, poisoning, burns, Heimlich maneuver, cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
  • Abuse and neglect.
  • Addiction and substance use.
  • Chronic illnesses – nursing management of problems affecting the child and family.

 

LABORATORY

The laboratory part includes hands-on sessions in the department’s lab and covers:

  • Nursing assessment of pediatric patients – use of new technologies
  • Measuring and assessing vital signs by age group
  • Newborn care – demonstration of bathing a healthy and ill newborn – skin care
  • Administration of medications to children – calculation of pediatric dosages and routes of administration
  • Oxygen administration in children – demonstration of methods
  • Collection of biological fluids – demonstration of methods and culture techniques
  • Breastfeeding – demonstration of feeding via nasogastric tube
  • Nursing assessment and management of fever
  • Basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in children – Heimlich maneuver
  • Demonstration of bowel evacuation techniques
