LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course aims to introduce students to the basic principles and concepts of addiction nursing. More specifically, basic knowledge is provided in relation to addictive substances, their mode of action, as well as the biological and psychological effects that may occur in cases of their use and abuse. At the same time, the assessment procedures of substance use and abuse for the purpose of early diagnosis are examined, which can be applied by nurses both in primary health care and in general hospitals. Additionally, during the educational process, students explore the dimensions of substance use, abuse and dependence, a phenomenon that is extremely burdensome for both societies and their members. Finally, issues regarding the protective and aggravating factors in relation to the development of addictive behaviors are discussed, while the prevention and treatment models applied both in our country and worldwide are described in the context of an evidence based parallel critical evaluation.
