LEARNING OUTCOMES
The aim of the course is for the students to understand the meaning of Nursing care and to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills related to the provision of care in accordance with the basic principles of nursing. Also, the familiarization of students with the basic principles of nursing care for the treatment of patients with pathological and surgical problems.
After the end of the training in the course the students will be able to:
- To assess the basic needs and problems of patients.
- To plan and implement personalized nursing care, as well as to evaluate the results of care.
- To apply therapeutic, supportive and preventive nursing interventions to the adult patient.
- To describe the patient’s treatment needs at all levels of Health Care.
- To apply protective mechanisms of the body during the practice of nursing

SYLLABUS
THEORY
- The structure of the Health System in Greece.
- General information about hospitals. Health care team.
- Patient΄s admission to the hospital.
- Nursing unit, organization, ward, equipment.
- Patient management techniques in health care. Principles of Mechanics of the Human Body.
- Control of infections. Asepsis, principles of surgical asepsis.
- Decontamination, disinfection, sterilization.
- Hospital-acquired infections and recording criteria. The role of the office of hospital-acquired infections.
- Hellenic Center of Disease Control and Prevention (HCPDCP).
- Health care and safety.
- Comfort, rest and sleep – Movement and exercise.
- Drug administration (in general). Oral drug-collyrium/eye drops, ointments, patches.
- Parenteral Drug Administration. Intra-Muscular Injection-Subcutaneous Injection-Intradermal Injection.
LABORATORY
- Nursing unit-organization-ward-equipment (Demonstration of bed parts, linen and nursing material).
- Personalized caring for bedridden patients (Demonstration of ways and methods of bed making with patient and without patient)
- Principles of Mechanics of the Human Body -Movement and exercise.
- Demonstration of ways and methods of aseptic technique.
- Hand hygiene
- Impact of non-hygiene on hospital-acquired infections.
- European Directive Ε.Ν. 1500 on hand antisepsis.
- Wound care using aseptic technique.
- Sterilization of surgical instruments and clothing.
- Use of personal protective equipment.
- Preparation and maintenance of the sterilized field.
- Applying sterile gloves.
- Patient’s basic needs coverage (morning care – oral care – bed bath – personal hygiene – foot bath).
- Drug administration in general: Peros medicines – Collyrium, ointments, patches (Demonstration of ways and methods).
- Parenteral Drug Administration – Intra-muscular Injection – Subcutaneous Injection – Intradermal Injection.
