LEARNING OUTCOMES
The purpose of the course is for students to acquire evidence-based knowledge regarding the biological, psychological, and spiritual needs of children and adolescents with chronic diseases, as well as the needs of their families. The objective is for students to apply the knowledge gained to identify the health problems of both the child and the family and to understand how to implement nursing care according to international best practices.
The course content introduces students to the fundamental principles and concepts of chronic disease during childhood, its impact on the child and the family, and the nursing care provided from the moment of diagnosis through to the end-of-life stage. It also addresses the issues, needs, and care of children affected by the most common chronic diseases, such as bronchial asthma, diabetes mellitus, cancer, chronic kidney failure, neurological disorders, and eating disorders.
A key aim of the course is for students to understand the importance of family-centered care and the role of effective communication between nurses and parents in addressing the needs of children with chronic diseases.
By the end of the six-month course, students will be able to:
- Identify the framework and current trends in the care of children with chronic diseases
- Describe and recognize the effects of chronic disease on children and their families
- Holistically assess and evaluate the nursing problems faced by children with chronic conditions
- Design and apply individualized nursing interventions using new technologies
- Provide effective nursing support to children with chronic diseases during the end-of-life stage
- Involve the family in the planning and education of care for children with chronic diseases
